1. Long-Range Planning:
Initiated during the due diligence phase, right after the mine design is completed. It involves evaluating the mine as a whole and planning for its entire lifespan. This phase includes developing an annual production profile to meet current market needs. Long-range plans should be reviewed annually to ensure sufficient reserves are available and to make any necessary adjustments to the plan. This approach helps align long-term goals with market demands and resource availability.
2. Mid-Range Planning:
Typically covers the next few years, usually around three. This phase involves broad equipment scheduling, establishing new underground workings, and removing overburden to uncover new sections of the pit. Mid-range plans should be reviewed quarterly or bi-annually and adjusted as necessary to ensure the project stays on track and adapts to any changes or challenges that arise.
3. Short-Range Planning:
Focuses on day-to-day mining operations, typically planned 24-48 hours in advance. This stage involves detailed scheduling for equipment, ore grade blending, maintenance, and labor assignments. During this process, all aspects of the design phase are incorporated, and adjustments are made as necessary. The primary goal is to establish and execute a production schedule while calculating operating and sustaining capital costs, which are then integrated into the project’s financial valuation. This ensures efficient and cost-effective mining operations.
